Influence of Forest Stand Structure and Competing Understory Vegetation on Ash Regeneration—Potential Effects of Ash Dieback

چکیده
Background and Objectives: The existence of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) in Europe is severely endangered by dieback. To support its future sustainability, it essential to improve the natural regeneration. main aim this study was investigate influence light conditions, conceivably influenced stand structure/ash dieback, on regeneration competition between seedlings species growing understory. Materials Methods: We selected 40 plots a riparian forest located Bavaria, Germany. Light-related variables (Leaf Area Index, gap fraction) were gathered with fish-eye photography, whereas other environmental factors derived from vegetation surveys (Ellenberg indicator values). assessed parameters such as species’ richness coverage herb layer account for seedlings. Results: Our results indicate that favoured under shady conditions. majority abiotic not statistically associated analysed metrics. In contrast, grass negatively related LAI positively fraction. Higher coverages linked suppression A higher litter frequency Nonparametric partial correlation analyses demonstrated stressed particular importance. Conclusions: conclude gaps, inter alia induced favour invasion. turn, invasion might suppress ash. regard, rapid silvicultural management reforestation gaps after dieback mature trees recommended. interspecific during growth should be also considered. pace additionally timing quantity accumulation; thus, further research focus these interrelations.

Effects of endophytic fungi on the ash dieback pathogen.
While Hymenoscyphus fraxineus causes dieback of the European ash (Fraxinus excelsior), flowering ash (F. ornus) appears resistant to the pathogen. To date, contributions of endophytic fungi to host resistance are unknown. The following hypotheses were tested: (i) endophytic fungi enhance the resistance of F. excelsior to the pathogen; (ii) resistance of F. ornus relies on its community of endop...
متن کاملCrowdsourced analysis of ash and ash dieback through the Open Ash Dieback project: A year 1 report on datasets and analyses contributed by a self-organising community
Ash dieback is a fungal disease of ash trees caused by Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus that has swept across Europe in the last two decades and is a significant threat to the ash population. This emergent pathogen has been relatively poorly studied and little is known about its genetic make-up. In response to the arrival of this dangerous pathogen in the UK we took the unusual step of providing an ...
متن کاملClimate change and the ash dieback crisis
Beyond the direct influence of climate change on species distribution and phenology, indirect effects may also arise from perturbations in species interactions. Infectious diseases are strong biotic forces that can precipitate population declines and lead to biodiversity loss. It has been shown in forest ecosystems worldwide that at least 10% of trees are vulnerable to extinction and pathogens ...
متن کاملCrowdsourcing genomic analyses of ash and ash dieback – power to the people
Ash dieback is a devastating fungal disease of ash trees that has swept across Europe and recently reached the UK. This emergent pathogen has received little study in the past and its effect threatens to overwhelm the ash population. In response to this we have produced some initial genomics datasets and taken the unusual step of releasing them to the scientific community for analysis without f...
